Confidentiality Policy and Procedures
Clapp Memorial Library is a
501(c)(3) organization and therefore, donations are tax deductible as allowed
by law.
Gifts to the Clapp For Community Campaign may be made in a number of
ways. Gifts may be made outright or
paid over a three- five year pledge
period. Listed below are the most common gift options. Careful
consideration of your gift and tax incentives may allow you to do more for
others than you may realize. As with all major decisions, we encourage
you to consult with your financial / tax advisor(s).
Gifts of Cash
An outright gift or pledge
payment of cash, check or by credit card is the most common way to give.
The Campaign accepts all major credit cards. To donate by credit card,
either
request a credit card donation form at
donations@clappforcommunity.org
or
click
on the "Donate
On-Line" button on the right and access our secure payment page.
Instructions for Electronic Funds
Transfer (EFT) are also available by contacting
donations@clappforcommunity.org
Gifts
of Securities
Many
donors have found that giving appreciated stock or shares of
mutual funds held for one year or more is preferable to giving cash. With
a gift of appreciated stock the donor can support the library, receive an
income tax deduction, and avoid capital gains taxes.
More
Matching Gifts
Donors who are employed by companies with matching gift programs can
increase the value of their gift by completing the necessary forms.
Generally, the Human Resources Office provides employees with the
information they need to generate a matching gift. Check to see if your
employer matches gifts to libraries. Any donor whose gift is matched by a
corporate contribution will receive credit for the amount of the match
for recognition purposes, and the corporate donor will be included in
all campaign recognition listings.
Challenge Grants
Corporate, foundation and individual grants are sometimes made, contingent upon the recipient’s ability to raise
additional amounts from new donors or other sources. Making a challenge grant to our campaign could
encourage others to give at higher levels and energize the campaign.
Bequests and
other Testamentary Gifts
The library has benefited greatly from donors who made
gifts through their wills. Donors age 70 years and older
who provide a copy of the portion of their wills that names Clapp Memorial
Library as a beneficiary will be recognized for the value of that gift
during the campaign.
Life Insurance Policies
Donors who have insurance policies they no longer need may use them
as gifts to the library. New policies, naming us as the beneficiary, may be
made as well, guaranteeing us a future gift. Please consult with your
financial advisor if considering a gift of life insurance.
Other Giving Options
Gifts of Real Estate
Real estate, developed or undeveloped, is a potential charitable
gift. If you own property which has appreciated over a long time and you
want to help us fulfill our mission, you may want to consider donating
property. Property can be donated outright, placed in an income generating
trust (see trusts) or deeded to us. In the case of a residence, donors can
retain the right to live there for the reminder their lives. Gifts of real
estate are valued at their fair market value, and have various tax
implications, so discussing this with your financial advisor is strongly
recommended. Gifts of real estate require an independent appraisal,
environmental audit and are subject to approval in advance by the Clapp
Memorial Library Board of Trustees. Please let your campaign volunteer or a
member of the Board of Trustees know you are considering a gift of real
estate.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
Donors may fund a separately managed trust with cash, securities
and/or other property which, in turn, pays income to the donor and/or other
beneficiaries for life. The principal of the trust eventually passes
directly to the library. Charitable Remainder Trusts can be an attractive
method for donors who are considering making substantial gifts to the
library, but are looking for these assets to provide them with income for
the reminder of their life/lives.
Charitable Lead Trusts
Donors may also opt to benefit the library today, while providing for
future generations in the form of a charitable lead trust. Assets are
placed in a trust, generating income to the library for a fixed number of
years, with the principal going to family members at the end of the trust.
The full amount of anticipated income contributed over the term of the
charitable trust lead trust will be recorded as the amount pledged, with the
actual income payments as credit against that pledge.
Recognition
Recognition of your gift or pledge is an additional endorsement of the
library and its mission, and encourages others to give. Your gift or pledge
can be made in your own name or in honor or memory of
loved ones. Unless otherwise noted by the donor, all gifts and pledges to
the campaign will be recognized in a special publication
to be printed after the close of the campaign. The amounts will be kept
confidential.
Gifts of $1,000
or more are eligible for recognition on a Clapp for Community Major Donor
Wall to be located in a prominent place in the library at the conclusion of
the project.
Gifts of $10,0000
to $1,000,000
are eligible for
individual plaques under the Named Gift
Opportunities. This option is ideal for making a meaningful philanthropic statement,
honoring or memorializing an individual or group, and leaving a legacy that
will be honored for generations to come. Named gifts are subject to
availability and will be reserved on a first-come/first-served basis.
Please
contact us to learn more about these opportunities or to get suggestions on how gifts and pledges might be pooled together for purposes
of recognition..
Donors who do
not wish to be recognized should check off the "Anonymous" box located on
the pledge card.
Donor Rights and
Confidentiality
A strict policy and
procedures are in place to ensure confidentiality of donor information.
