Voter Support
Needed
Vote on Clapp for
Community’s 2 1/2 override on ELECTION DAY, NOVEMBER
4th.
Belchertown voters are being asked to support a proposal to
renovate and expand its public library. The total cost of the project is
estimated at $10.6 million. About half that amount will be paid from a state
grant and private fund raising. The Town is being asked to pay for the
remainder. On November 4th, voters will be asked to exempt the cost of
borrowing from the Proposition 2 1/2 tax limit law. If that passes by
a majority, the project will also require approval by a 2/3 vote at a Town
Meeting (not yet scheduled).
Why should we vote YES on #4?
Belchertown's population has grown seven-fold
in 121 years.
We offer more programs than most libraries our
size and still have waiting lists and lotteries for participation.
We need to renovate and expand to meet
community needs for the present and the future.
This is a golden opportunity for our Town to
invest in its library at about half the total cost, due to the state funding
cycle.
The proposal will bring our beautiful and
historic building into the 21st century while preserving its character and
original purpose.
The library serves everyone and is an essential
local resource.
