Sixty-one
percent of the population of Belchertown have library cards. It is the majority of our residents who need this expansion; not
just an elite or special interest group.
The Library does
not merely house a book collection, although it does have that. It is also
the keeper of local genealogy and historical works, a public art gallery, a
public meeting place, a source for Internet access and computer use, and a
place for programs and activities for adults and children. Many seniors use
the Library very frequently, often every day it is open.
The Library's expanding functions have also meant increased use from new or
growing segments of the community. Today the library is seriously short of
space to accommodate its existing uses and has absolutely nowhere to grow
for the future. Without this expansion, the library will essentially be at a
standstill while the community around it grows and demands more.
For years, the Library's needs have been on the backburner. If we defer it
any longer, it will only cost us more. Please consider the cultural,
intellectual and social needs of this community in your
decision making.
