Country Bank
Gives $50,000 to Library Expansion
BELCHERTOWN
Country
Bank for Savings has committed $50,000 to the Clapp Memorial Library’s
capital campaign, Library Board of Trustees President Stephen Lanphear
announced on Wednesday. The Ware-based bank has a branch in Belchertown,
where the library is located. The library plans to renovate its
121-year-old existing building and construct a 20,000-square-foot
addition.
“Gifts from
community institutions like Country Bank are an important visible
endorsement of the library and our mission,” said Lanphear about the
donation. “They also encourage others to give.” Officials at the bank
and on the library board are discussing how to best commemorate the gift
within the library when the project is complete.
Bank
president Paul Scully said that helping venerable institutions like the
library grow and modernize to meet the needs of future generations is
important to his organization. “Whether we are teaching financial
literacy to kids, funding hospitals and libraries, or recognizing
outstanding educators, our giving focuses on improving the quality of life
in the communities we serve,” he said.
Scully said
that the library project impressed the bank’s board of directors, in part
because of the large number of people currently being served in the
nineteenth- century structure. “After all,” he said, “Country Bank was
founded in 1850, so we understand the need for updating historical
institutions in order to continue meeting the needs of people in the
twenty-first century. The popularity of Clapp Memorial Library’s services
and the long-term financial, social and educational benefits of renovation
and expansion convinced us that this is a sound investment for the bank to
support.”
The bank
will formally present the gift to the Trustees at a brief ceremony at the
library on May 7, 2009 at 3 p.m.
